Wanda’s Introductions

We have now updated our website for 2024 and it is ready to go. As we do each year, we have added a few of our own intros as well as many others from various hybridizers that we hope many of you will like. We try to be selective, as we have hybridizing in mind for most of our plant purchases. We would be happy for you to look around and delighted if you would like to order a few. We always ship more than two fans with our intros as well as all other plants we ship. Often they can be 3 to 6 fans, as we always want to ship nice size plants that will establish well and bloom quickly. As we do each year, we have added some new additions and retired a few that had been around a while.

For spring shipments we will ship from early April until the end of May. For fall shipments we outlook those shipping from early September  through late October. We normally do not dig during bloom season (June through August) as daylilies aren’t happy moving then, we are focusing on hybridizing during that time, and like to keep the garden fresh for visitors during bloom season. We would be happy for you to visit and delighted if you would like to order a few during your visit. We will arrange a pick-up time when it isn’t as hot so the plants and you will be happier during their move. Thanks and happy gardening for 2024.

PLEASE NOTE: We ask for a $40 minimum order, when shipping by mail, so it will cover all our shipping expenses for our heavier plants. We appreciate your interest and business. Please visit us during bloom season if you have the opportunity, although please call ahead to make sure we are home.

Thank you again for your business and enjoy the virtual visit.

Red Petticoats

W. Quinn (2019 – Fall) Height – 30″, Bloom – 6″, Mid Season, Dormant, 3 branches, 16 buds. (sdlg X Sdlg) We are pretty sure it is out of ‘Complementary Colors’ but not positive. Wanda has selected this good red with strong clear color and good plant habit as one of her perennial garden selections. $25   SOLD OUT

Merlot On My Mind

(W. Quinn 2018) Height – 40″, Bloom – 6.5, Early-Mid Season,

Rebloom, Dormant, 4 branches, 24 buds, Unusual Form – Crispate-Cascade.  Dark purple with a darker purple eye and saturated green/yellow throat.  Petals and sepals constantly curl for the crispate form. (Stack The Deck X Work With Me Annie) $25

Work With Me Annie has been one of Wanda’s favorite flowers since it arrived at Windyhill. Both for the flower as well as its name. When Wanda makes a cross with it she always tells it to “work with me annie”. And when crossed it with Stack The Deck, it did!! It has been one of the favored flowers for both of us to hybridize with since its first bloom.

BLOODY MARYS AT WINDYHILL  (Quinn-W., 2017)

height 29 in.(73 cm), bloom 4.125 in.(10 cm), season M, Rebloom, Dormant, Tetraploid, 18 buds, 3 branches,  Burnt orange with darker orange halo, small yellow green throat, ruffled petals and slightly darker edge.. (Mister Lucky × unknown)  (Double fan or more) $20  SOLD OUT

This small flower had always been quite showy each season. It is a sibling to ‘WINDYHILL’S DESIGNER RED’ but doesn’t have the same glowing finish. It does, though, have its own unique color and finish that is part of its appeal. One of my favorates. Not sure where the name came from. Maybe Wanda was thinking ahead to our neighborhood get-together in the garden the morning after our summer meeting.

RUBY RED SUNDROPS (Quinn, 2017)

height 32 in.(81 cm), bloom 4.25 in.(10 cm), season EM, Rebloom, Dormant, Tetraploid, 14 buds, 3 branches,  Red with a slight orange shading, and darker halo.. (Mister Lucky × unknown)  $20

Although this one shows me, Raymond, as the hybridizer of record, it was really one of Wanda’s selections. Again from the same cross as ‘WINDYHILL’S DESIGNER RED’, it didn’t have that same unique finish as WDR. It is, though, a very pretty small flower with good consistent form, and a very appealing color between red and orange.

WINDYHILL’S DESIGNER RED

(W. Quinn 2015)  Bloom: 4 3/8″, Scape: 24″, Mid-Season, Rebloom, Deciduous, Tetraploid, 20 buds, 2 branches, (Mister Lucky X Unknown): The crosses that produced ‘WDR’ were made by Wanda on plants sitting in our driveway of our previous house before we moved to our current location.  With little time available, the pollen parents were not recorded. In this case, we wish they had been. Although the branching and bud count has not been as great as we wish, it does rebloom once and often twice in a season, extending the show. What is most special is the texture and substance. Much like its pod parent, ‘Mister Lucky’, ‘WDR’ has very good substance and does not “slick” or fade as reds often do in the mid-day sun. Even more unique, hard to describe, and pretty much impossible to photograph, is the surface texture or what I call “finish” of this flower. It virtually glows!! And does this consistently from early morning until the end of the day. It is always instantly recognizable in the garden. As always, it is difficult to make progress with reds. We have made many crosses with ‘WDR’ onto other very good reds, but so far not a lot of success in passing on its glowing finish.   $25  SOLD OUT (Double fan or more)
